Why do so many of us, especially in the United States, feel compelled to make resolutions every January 1st?

Even though most of them are highly predictable (stop smoking, lose weight, exercise more, earn or save more, get organized, spend more time on XYZ, etc.) — and 80% or more of these resolutions typically don’t last beyond February.
